The magnitude a star would appear to have if it were at a standard distance of 10 parsecs. Absolute magnitudes are a method of comparing the actual luminosities of stars on an arbitrary scale.
For an asteroid or comet, the absolute magnitude is the apparent magnitude it would have at zero phase angle and at a distance of 1 AU from both the Sun and Earth.
