The meteor stream has an unusual orbit with a perihelion distance of only 0.14 AU. IRAS, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, discovered a cometary nucleus in 1983, designated as asteroid 3200 Phaethon, which appears to be the parent body for this stream.
