4 October 2007 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite. In those fifty years, we have put human beings on the moon, robots on Venus, Mars, Titan, and the asteroids Eros and Itokawa, and viewed close-range images of all the planets of the solar system.
