Ancient Galaxies’ Magnetic Fields Have Not Increased in Strength

Eight or nine billion years ago, galaxies’ magnetic fields were equal in strength to what they are

today, according to research by astronomers from the European Southern Observatory

The astronomers studied data from 70 Milky Way-like galaxies at optical wavelengths, as well as 25 years’ worth of radio observations of magnetic fields, and found that magnetic field strengths were surprisingly high. This contradicts current theories of galactic formation, which are based on the belief that galactic magnetic fields were originally very weak but grew in strength as the universe grew older.
