Using the Keck II telescope in Hawaii, astronomers from Australia, Europe and the US have shown that outlying stars which were thought to be stragglers are actually moving in lockstep with other stars in the Andromeda galaxy. This makes the Andromeda galaxy 220,000 light-years across. Earlier estimates said that it was about 75,000 light-years across.
