Animals Survive in Outer Space for Over a Week

In 2008, some small eight-legged invertebrates called tardigrades survived for ten days while exposed to the conditions of outer space.

The tardigrades, which measure a little over a millimetre across, were placed on an ESA spacecraft in low-Earth orbit and were exposed to the vacuum of space, cosmic rays and the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Some of them survived the journey and were even able to reproduce after they returned.
