Over a period of three years, an international team of
astronomers have recorded 27 of the highest energy cosmic rays, the most
energetic particles in the universe. They have used these recordings to paint a
picture of the sky which shows that it is very likely that the cosmic rays are
coming from galaxies with massive black holes.
The team are using the Pierre Auger Observatory in
Argentina. Because lower-energy cosmic
rays are more easily deflected by magnetic fields, it is easier to find the
original source of higher-energy rays.
