The Cassini spacecraft, which is orbiting Saturn, has taken the first close-up pictures of Saturn’s moon, Hyperion. The images show that Hyperion has a reddish surface. It is dotted with craters and looks like a sponge. No one knows how it got that look.

Hyperion’s surface is unlike that of any of Saturn’s other moons.

Hyperion is 266 kilometres across, and has an irregular shape.
