NASA's Mini-SAR, a radar aboard India's Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter, has found water ice deposits mixed with hydrocarbons near the north pole of the Moon. The ice was discovered inside 40 small craters. NASA believes that there could be at least 1.3 trillion pounds of ice in total. The extremely cold temperatures inside these craters, where it can drop to as low as around -250C, or -400F, keep the ice stable. For the past year, Mini-SAR has been mapping the craters of the Moon that cannot be seen from Earth. Previously, NASA's LCROSS mission discovered water ice and water vapor after crashing a rocket and probe into a crater at the Moon's south pole. Water ice on the Moon could be mined in order to supply a Moon base. President Barack Obama has canceled plans to send Americans back to the Moon by 2020.
