On Monday, March 2, 2005, the Mars Express spacecraft started deploying its radar to look for water nearly 5 kilometers beneath the surface of Mars. European Space Agency scientists had delayed the unfolding of the radar's antenna elements for over a year because they were afraid that the booms could swing back and hit the spacecraft, causing damage to other precious instruments.
