NASAs rover Opportunity finally freed itself from a Martian sand dune on June 4, 2005. On April 25, as it was crossing a series of shallow sandy ridges, it got stuck and spent weeks spinning its wheels. NASAs ground controllers were able to slowly back the rover over its previous tracks till it eventually became unstuck.
