Not Enough Funds to Monitor Earths Health

The US National Research Council (NRC) warned on April 27, 2005 that lack of funds has caused the network of satellites monitoring the health of the Earth to fall into disarray. Six recent NASA earth-observing missions have been scaled back, delayed, or cut completely. These satellites perform duties such as analyzing changes in soil moisture that can precede a famine, tracking the ozone layer, and forecasting hurricanes.

Funding for Earth sciences has become less of a priority now that President Bush has declared that he would like to see a manned mission to Mars.
