A satellite designed by student aerospace and engineering teams in 23 university groups was successfully carried into orbit by a Russian Booster rocket on October 27.
It was part of a European Space Agency program meant to help inspire and train future aerospace workers.
The Student Space Exploration and Technology Initiative (SSETI) Express spacecraft is the size of a washing machine. It took off from the Plesetsk launch site in northern Russia at 05.52 (BST) on top of a Kosmos 3M launcher. It reached orbit minutes later.
More than 400 students contributed to the project, either in their spare time, or as part of a degree.
