A team of geologists who have studied Mars Express images believe that a frozen sea may lie under MarsÂ’ Elysium Planitia. The team, led by John Murray of Open University, UK, have discovered that the images show irregular slabs which resemble arctic pack ice. Murray believes that volcanic ash landed on the ice covering the basin, which is about 500 miles across and 150 feet deep, then mixed with it as the ice slowly evaporated.
