NASA's space shuttle Atlantis was launched Saturday morning at 11:15 am (1514:55 GMT) on a crucial mission to resume construction of the International Space Station, after delays caused by weather and technical problems.
The last ISS construction mission was in November 2002. It is the third shuttle flight since Columbia disintegrated over Texas in February 2003, killing all seven astronauts onboard. NASA plans 16 shuttle missions to complete the half-finished orbiting laboratory by 2010, when the three-shuttle fleet is to be retired.
