Three stars are now vying for the title of largest known star in the universe. They are KW Sagittarii, V354 Cephei, and KY Cygni. They are all red giants with diameters of about 14 astronomical units. The size of the stars was determined by Emily Levesque of MIT, Philip Massey of Lowell Observatory, and Knut A. Olsen of Cerro Tololo Inter-American observatory. The previous largest known star is Mu Cephei, also known as Herschel’s Garnet Star.
