To date, one thousand comets have been found using the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft.
On August 5, 2005, Toni Scarmati, an astrophysics graduate of Bologna University who currently teaches high school, discovered the 999th and 1000th comets found using SOHO. A joint effort between NASA and the European Space Agency, SOHO has accounted for approximately one-half of all comet discoveries with computed orbits in the history of astronomy.
