US Congress Approves Search for Earth-Threatening Asteroids

The US Congress has approved a NASA-led search for Earth-threatening asteroids. It is part of a bill awaiting the signature of President George W. Bush. The bill authorises NASA operations for 2007 or 2008. It would give NASA a year to devise a plan to catalogue 90 per cent of potentially Earth-threatening asteroids, some of them as small as 140 metres, within 15 years. The bill does not provide any money for this; however, survey telescopes are already being developed.
